Description: The Animal Care Curator/Manager will develop and direct the professional husbandry protocols for the entire collection of animals at Wild Adventures which include small mammals, carnivores, avian, elephants, hoof stock and reptile collection. The Curator/Manager will plan, develop and implement, through a team of husbandry professionals, departmental goals and strategies which focus on attention to animal health, excellence in exhibit and visitor experience and strong leadership and training abilities. As a member of the management team, the Animal Care Curator/Manager will participate in the overall fiscal and operational planning and management of the animal area of the park, as well as in the design and startup of any future facility expansion.
Essential Job Functions:
- Assist in formulation and interpreting administrative policies of the animal care area.
- Oversees the curatorial, technical and supervisory staff.
- Negotiates with administrators or other institutions to obtain exchange or loan collection.
- Maintains inventory, prepares curatorial budget
- Obtains, develops and organizes new collections to expand and improve educational and entertainment exhibits and/or venues.
- Consults with upper level management to plan and implement animal public service activities of the park.
- Formulates plans for special projects
- Oversees the maintenance of daily husbandry of animals in assigned areas.
- Oversees and directs as well as monitors assigned animals closely with regard to general appearance, diet consumption levels, condition of fecal matter, etc.
- Review the records of daily observations pertaining to the health and behavior of animals and make necessary adjustments.
- Ensures that the staff is cleaning animal exhibits, yards, pools, night enclosures, and service areas.
- Participate in handling and restraint procedures.
- Assists in the treatment of collection animals.
- Operate a variety of light and medium equipment.
- Coordinators daily keeper talks designed to educate the guests on a variety of animals throughout the park.
- Manage the supervisor and animal keepers
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements:
- Applicant must have an Associates’ Degree or equivalent; and 5 plus years of exotic animal experience with Zoo or related facility and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology or related field is strongly preferred.
- Previous experience in facility maintenance is desired but not required.
- The position requires a highly organized, team oriented and motivated individual with experience in all aspects of Aquarium animal husbandry and husbandry staff management.
