Cherry Headed Conure Cherry Headed Conure

SCIENTIFIC NAME:  Aratinga erythrogenys

The cherry headed or red-masked conure is mostly green with a striking red head and red underwing-coverts and large red patch at the bend of its wing.
Conures are similar to macaws but are a miniature version. The basic difference between the two genera lies in the size of the bare eye ring, which is much smaller for conures.

Conures make a lot of noise and are boisterous. At dusk, the cherry headed conure will join a large flock of noisy birds that are settling in for the night high up in the trees. It’s gregarious, especially outside breeding season and is generally found in pairs or groups up to 12 birds. It often associates with mixed flocks. The cherry headed conure is nearly threatened and is the most frequent captive parrot, which is traded in large numbers internationally from Peru.
